I am taking a grad. class right now titled "Issues in Education." It can be quite a frustrating class for me because I am the kind of person who is very efficent: See the problem, plan of attack..do it...DONE! Move on...With this class however, the issues we discuss will never be solved because the solutions to the problem require too much organization and management and that is almost impossible to implement in such a large system. Well, the issue that really cuts to my core is the whole TITLE ONE law; the schools that qualify (a.k.a low income students) get money dumped on them from the government. I'm sorry, but dumping money on a problem is not going to solve it. Its like the negelint father who feels guilty about working too much so to make up for it, he takes his daughter to the mall, hands her the credit and lets her free. Letting his daughter go free with unlimited money is not going to solve the problem of his daughter growing up without a father figure-Its not going to solve the problem when his daughter runs into the arms of abusive men to try and find love from a man she never had as a little girl.
The heart of the problem is this: If the community VALUES education, then the kids and schooling will succeed. If they don't, then the school will fail. Why is it that the failing schools have the most problems with truancy, behavior, violence and failing grades? Money? NO...I think not...look at the family structure...do you think the mom who has five kids from five different men cares about education? Do you think that the parents inspire Jr. to make something great of himself/herself? I taught a class in China and let me tell you, those classrooms had 15 old desks and a squeaky chalkboard--yep, thats right, no internet, computers, high tech smart boards, overheads or even air conditioning. They were on time, worked without break, asked questions, and worked some more (they even thanked me at the end of the day!) THey VALUE education. THey know that not everyone has the gift of moving on to higher education; they know that in order to make something of themselves, they have to WORK! Do you think they would qualify for title one if they were a U.S school...oh you bet they would. DO they have such programs in China? No. Why? Because the Chinese students know that knowledge is the key to a bright future. THey understand that not everyone gets the oppertunity to go. Children in third world countries all over the world would do anything to attend school...to sit on dirt floors and share old, worn books. They thirst for knowledge and growth.
The fact that everyone in the United States has access to schooling is incredible and we take it for granted...THAT is the reason our "schools" are failing...not money....ITs THe ATTITUDE!
My solution?: Let the kids who don't want to go to school stay home. Make more room in the class for kids who actually want to be there. Maybe we should take something from China in this case...maybe school shouldn't be required...perhaps it should be a PRIVLEDGE. THen maybe kids will actually view it that way.

First of all your blog is brilliant. I'm sitting here at school- at the front desk.. bored so I found your blog through Johns.
You're a fantastic read.. & extremely passionate about the things in your life. I hope you don't mind that I'm reading this, but I've loved it & its encouraging.
If the Lord calls you to do His work in another country.. I will be praying for you both, very much.
Anyways, just wanted to say hi. And remember, as I'm having to remember, God will not call you to something you cannot handle.. maybe on our own we can't- or think we can't, but He knows how far He can take us.
Love ya guys.
Em
